Tourism is Montana's fastest-growing industry.
Nonresident spending in Missoula County is over $149 million dollars and historically 94-96% of those expenditures are made in the City of Missoula. These revenues generate roughly $30 million in payroll, creating more than 2,000 jobs. In 2003, nonresident visitors spent more than $1.87 billion in the State of Montana, the equivalent of $2,000 for every Montana resident. That $1.87 billion generated more than $2.6 billion in total economic impact. Tourism also generates more than $135 million in State and local tax revenue, or 8% of Montanas total tax collection. Statewide the tourism industry generates nearly 37,000 jobs and over $738 million in personal income.
